Zero Food Waste Cyprus
Zero Food Waste Cyprus is an initiative that was born in 2018. It consists of a group of young volunteers that aim to actively reduce food waste by attending local fruit and vegetable markets across the island and indirectly by hosting events in an effort to raise awareness about eliminating food waste and how this supports the circular economy. We are currently operating in two markets, one in the OXI market in Nicosia and one in Kyrenia. At both markets, volunteers collect waste produce donated by the local vendors, sort edible to non-edible and measure the quantities of the products, which are kept for statistical usage. The non-edible products are composted, while the edible products are given out for free to the local community. So far, we have saved 71,245 kg of fruits and vegetables and donated it to 9,421 people.
